Mrs. Goldie Morris Eley age 90, of Jackson, NC passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2014.
Goldie M. Eley was born November 5, 1923 in Simon’s Creek (Elizabeth City), North Carolina to W.P. and Alpine Morris. She and her two sisters, Helen and Harriet, moved with her parents to Jackson in the mid-1930’s where her father would establish a successful lumber company.
Upon graduating from Jackson High School she entered Elon College at 16 years old and graduated three years later with a degree in education. In was during the war years and Goldie and the other co-eds did their part to boost morale of the troops in training at a facility adjacent to the college. “After the soldiers completed their training we would see them off at the train station, promise to write, wave good bye, then wait on the platform for the next train of young recruits to report for duty.”
At the age of 20, Goldie began a long, productive career as a public school educator; first in Franklin, VA where she would meet her husband of 63 years, Jasper Eley. “He swept me off my feet. I was a little country girl from Jackson. He was from the big city (Franklin), he had a car, and was a member of the Cotillion Dance Club.”
After marrying in 1947, Jasper and Goldie moved to Jackson where they built the home they lived in all their lives. Goldie taught school at Jackson Elementary until the first of her three children were born in 1953.
Goldie returned to public education in 1964 where she developed and implemented one of the State’s first migrant education programs and later the Northampton County school system’s reading and literacy program.
During this period she was awarded a master’s in education from East Carolina University.
Mrs. Eley was a charter member of the Jackson Women’s Club and served as club president and other offices in the club.
A lifelong member of Jackson United Methodist Church she served in various leadership positions and lead Sunday school for many years for both children and adults.
She was preceded in life by her husband, Jasper, and her parents.
She is survived by her three children David Eley and his wife Dona, Deborah Eley Tunstall and her husband Jim and Pauline Eley Williford and her husband Michael. Her two sisters; Helen Bloom and Hattie Beasley, both of Jackson. Five grandchildren, Maria and Elizabeth Eley, Keaton and Will Tunstall, Elizabeth Anne Williford); four great grandchildren Coco and Major Tunstall; Marlon and Desmond Eley-McClain; and many nephews and nieces.
A service of thanksgiving and praise for the life of Goldie Morris Eley will be held, Sunday, May 25, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Jackson United Methodist Church in Jackson, NC with Rev. Linda-Kathryn Clarke officiating. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.
The family will receive friends after the service at the home.
