William Otis 'Bill' Wheeler

Mr. William Otis “Bill” Wheeler, age 54 of Jackson, NC passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014.

Bill was born November 22, 1959 in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Bill spent his entire life as a law enforcement officer. He was a graduate of Northampton County High School-East, a graduate of the Justice Academy where he received a teaching certificate in law enforcement.

He is survived by his wife Gwen Warren Wheeler of Roanoke Rapids.

His sons, Chad Wheeler of Conway, Hunter and Gabriel Wheeler of Roanoke Rapids. His parents, Otis and Charlotte Smith Wheeler of Jackson. His sisters, Angie Wheeler of Jackson and Nettie W. Edwards of Roanoke Rapids. Four nephews, Trevor and Colby Edwards, Jesse and Matthew Warren and one niece Sarah Warren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 2:00 PM at

Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson with Dr. Julian Mills officiating. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Friday, June 6, 2014 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Mrs. Ophelia Dixon Massey Hobbs age 88 of Pleasant Hill died Wednesday, June 4, 2014.

Mrs. Hobbs was born December 23, 1925, the daughter of the late John Henry Dixon and Catherine Murfee Dixon. She was also preceded in death by her first husband Howard Lee Massey, her second husband Garland Stanfield Hobbs, a son, Howard Lee Massey Jr., her brothers, Troy Lee Dixon, Mitchell Dean Dixon, David Roy Dixon and John Henry Dixon Jr.

After her first husband passed away, she became a mother and a father to her two sons. In later years she worked as manager of Pleasant Hill Rest Home and later as manager of Pine Forest Rest Home.

She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she was a past member of the WMU, a Sunday School teacher and a member of the church choir.

She is survived by her sons, Harold Lee Massey and his wife Rose of Littleton, NC, Tommy Ray Massey and his wife Joan of Pleasant Hill. Her brothers, Donald Earl Dixon Sr. and his wife Pat of Gaston, NC and Mike Dixon and his wife Ada of Roanoke Rapids. Her grandsons, Jeff Massey and his wife Brook of Kinston, NC and Jason Massey and his wife Alyssa of Raleigh, NC. Her great grandson, Everett Luke Massey.

Her step grandson, Justin Aycock and his wife Nichole of Oxford, NC. Two step great grandchildren, Brian and Hailey. Also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Jim Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Linda Kay Taylor Feher, age 68 of Ahoskie, NC passed away June 6, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. Linda was born July 19, 1945 in Bertie County North Carolina the daughter of the late Thomas Taylor and Bessie Velva White.

Survivors include her husband Richard W. Feher, Sr. of Ahoskie, NC; her daughter, Holly Perry of Greenville, NC and three step-daughters, April Bartlett of Hudson, NC, Judy Mizelle of Ahoskie, NC, Betty Farmer of Lewiston, NC; two step-sons, Richard W. Feher, Jr. of Ahoskie, NC, John R. Feher of Ahoskie, NC; brother Bruce White “Pot” Taylor of Merry Hill, NC; one sister-in-law Ida Taylor of Merry Hill, NC.

Memorial services will be held Monday, June 9, 2014 at 2: 00 P.M. at Massey Funeral Home Chapel in Aulander, NC with Rev. Ronald McSwain officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC.

 Mr. Richard Thomas “Tom” Duke age 93 of Henrico, NC died Monday,

June 9, 2014 at Roanoke Rapids Health Care in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mr. Duke was born March 18, 1921 in Newport News, VA. He retired from the US Navy and was a proud veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Owens Duke. His sons, Richard Duke of St. Augustine, Florida and Paul Duke of Charlotte, NC. His daughter, Myra D. Colgate of Bryson City, NC. Four grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held, Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Spring United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Clyde officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spring United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Sandra Craft, 448 James Massey Rod, Pleasant Hill, NC 27866.

Penny Tyson Love, age 77 of Roanoke Rapids died Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Roanoke Rapids Health Care in Roanoke Rapids.

She was born August 8, 1936 in Greene County, NC, the daughter of the late Charlie Tyson and Clemmie Flake Tyson. She was also preceded in death by her son, Stephen Love, the father of her children Clayton Love, her brothers, Glenn, Harper, Allen, Floyd, and Charlie Tyson. A sister, Lillian Tyson Dail. She was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Love McKenzie of Roanoke Rapids and her son, Doug “Rooster” Love and his wife Sabrina of Pleasant Hill, NC. A brother, James Tyson of Wilson, NC. Her grandchildren, Crystal Shadrick and her husband Derick, James McKenzie, Brett Love and his wife Christian, April Love Perez, Lindsey Love Parsley and Stephen “Buster” Love. Thirteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Minister Earl Cain officiating. Burial will follow at  the Love Family Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Monday, June 16. 2014 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home of her daughter.

Mr. William E. “Butch” Parker age 63 of Roanoke Rapids, NC died Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

\Mr. Parker was born November 8, 1950 in Ahoskie, NC, the son of the late Grover C. Parker and Ruth Bracy Parker. He worked for the NC Department of Juvenile Justice for 30 years. He was head of this department for the counties of Halifax, Northampton, Hertford and Gates Counties. He was a member of First Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids.

He is survived by his wife Kathy Warren Parker. His sister, Bobbie P. Armstrong and her husband Donald of Ahoskie, NC. One very special niece, Meredith Leigh Armstrong.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, June 22, 2014 at 4:00 Pm at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery with Minister Bane Angles officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

William Joseph “Billy” Dunlow Jr., age 23 died Monday, June 23, 2014.

Billy was born November 1, 1990 in Pitt County, NC. He was preceded in death by his grandparents James and Alice Harris.

He is survived by his children, Jaylee Nicole Dunlow and Jennifer Harris Dunlow. His parents, William Joseph Dunlow Sr. and Jamie Lynn Dunlow. His grandparents, Carolyn and Clyde Scott and James and Debra Dunlow. His brothers, Justin Ray Dunlow, Richard Paul Dunlow and Daniel Trent Dunlow.

His niece, Kally Marie Dunlow and his nephew, Cameron Dunlow.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander with Rev. Stephen Barmer officiating.

Jeff Taylor

Mr. Jeff Taylor, age 63 of Pendleton, NC passed away Friday, June 27, 2014 at his home.

Jeff was born November 6, 1950 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Basil and Grace Galloway Taylor. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Taylor.

He was retired from International Paper and a member of Robert's Chapel Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Peggy Davis Taylor.  His children, Samantha and Kelly Taylor and his wife Elizabeth. A brother, Joseph Taylor and his wife Kathy. His grandchildren, William and Aiden. Also his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Mack Davis. Several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Robert's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Lonnie Armstrong officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Monday, June 30, 2014 from

7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home.

George Louis Froeba, age 82, husband of the late Rosanna Rich Froeba, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away on July 3, 2014.

He was born on June 14, 1932 in New Britain, CT son of George F. and Edith (Galpin) Froeba.

Survivors include his son, George E. Froeba and his girlfriend Norma Clemmons of Halifax, NC. Two grandchildren, Corena Bristow and Tanya Edmundson (husband-Christopher Edmundson) of Greenville, NC. Three sisters, Bernice Froeba, Peg Murphey (husband-Frank Murphey) of New Britain, CT, and Marion Plagemann of Madison, CT. Nieces and Nephews-Frankie Murphey of New Britain, CT and April Kosier (husband-Mike Kosier and their children, Helen and Evelyn) of Delanson, NY, Linda Kornhi (husband-Mike) of Pleasant Hill, OR, and Karl Plagemann of Guilford, CT.

 He was stationed in Germany in the Air force during the Korean War. He retired from Stanley Works with 35 years of service and moved to NC in 1989 to retire and be in the same place as his son and his son’s family. He was a member of Masonic Lodge in New Britain, CT and in Roanoke Rapids, NC as well as a member of the VFW and the Amvets.

 Graveside services will be held Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Mrs. Elizabeth Eason Davis, age 89 of Roanoke Rapids, NC died Monday, July 7, 2014 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.

Mrs. Davis was born March 15, 1925 in Edgecombe County, NC, the daughter of the late Albert “Ab” Eason and Elva Ricks Eason. She was also preceded in death by her husband Charles B. Davis and a brother that died at birth..

She once worked at Fairfax Motel and Restaurant before becoming manager of the motel. She then worked for Weldon School District as lunch room manager and later transferred to Roanoke Rapids High School as manager of the cafeteria.

She is survived by her son, Charles Dwayne Davis of Roanoke Rapids, a niece, Louise Clouda and a sister-in-law Darella Ellis.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 2:00 PM at

Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Maurice Wheat officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home Wednesday, July 9, 2014 beginning at 12:00 Noon until 1:45 PM prior to services.

Jasper William 'JW' Joyner

Mr. Jasper William “J.W” Joyner, age 87, formerly of Seaboard, NC died Monday, July 21, 2014 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield, NC.

Mr. Joyner was born July 5, 1927, the son of the late Isacc Henry Joyner and Myrtie Turner Joyner. He was also predeceased by his wife of sixty years, Eloise Drewett Joyner.

Mr. Joyner was a World War II Army Veteran. He attended A and E Airplane Mechanic’s School and served his country in Munich, Germany as an airplane mechanic.

He was a faithful member of Seaboard Baptist Church where he had served as deacon, Sunday School teacher and a member of the church choir for over 50 years. He also sang in the Northampton Men’s Choir for several years. He was also a member of the Seaboard Lions Club.

He is survived by his daughters, Anne J. Beale and son-in-law Mack of Greenville, NC and Nancy J. Wade and her husband Ronnie of Dunn, NC. His sister, Virginia J. Crawley of Bladenboro, NC. His grandchildren, Dean Wade and his wife Jill, Megan Beale Wamer and husband Timmy and James Beale. Six great grandchildren, Kealey and Ashtyn Wade, Joel, Conner and Anna Grace Wamer and Isabella Beale. Also a very special caregiver, Dee Metcatee.

Funeral services will be held, Friday, July 25, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Seaboard Baptist Church in Seaboard, NC with Rev. Richard Gaskins officiating. Burial will follow at Seaboard Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until service time at the church, prior to services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Seaboard Baptist Church.

Thomas Goodman Pierce

Mr. Thomas Goodman Pierce age 75, of Aulander, NC died Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Mr. Pierce was born December 18, 1938 in Bertie County, NC, the son of the late Richard and Odell Whitley Pierce.

He is survived by his significant other, Jeanette Hewitt, his children, Carolyn Faye Boyette of Oak City, NC, Linda Gray Casper of Rich Square, NC, Donna Coggins of Aurora, NC, Tommy Pierce of Colerain, NC, Billy Jack Pierce and his wife Toni of Roxobel, NC and Wendy Ashley and her husband Matt of Gates, NC.  Two sisters, Rachel Mabry and Mary Alice Karnes of Harrellsville, NC.  Nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 7:00 PM at

Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.

Joseph David Motzno

Mr. Joseph David Motzno age 90, formerly of Woodland, NC died Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Edgecombe Vidant Hospital.

Mr. Motzno was born November 24, 1923 in Suffolk, VA, the son of the late Samuel Robert Motzno and Jesse Griffin Motzno.

Mr. Motzno was a World War II Army Veteran having served his country in Europe, France and Belgium during World War II.  

He was owner of Motzno Clothing Store in Woodland, NC for many years, a member of the Lions Club, member of the Woodland Men’s Club, a member of the Northampton County Economic Development  Commission and one of the original organizers and member of the Woodland Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife Nina Braswell Motzno.  His children, Nanette Motzno Crawford and her husband Bryant of Hampstead, NC, Joseph David Motzno Jr. of Wilson, NC and Eric Motzno and his wife Nancy of Henderson, Nevada. Three grandchildren, Jennifer Terry of Mount Pleasant, SC, Sabrina Motzno of Fredericksburg, VA and Joseph

“Joey” David Motzno III of Fredericksburg, VA.  Two great grandchildren, Reagan Elizabeth Terry nd Nathan Motzno.

Graveside services will be held Friday, August 1, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Woodland Cemetery in Woodland, NC with Rev. Lemar Wheeler and Dr. Ralph Brabban officiating.

The family will receive friends at Woodland Baptist Church from10:00 AM until service time on Friday.

Donna was born October 5, 1961 in Hertford County, NC.

She is survived by her children, Joseph Baines and Ashley Madry. Her mother, Ann Wilson and stepfather Allen.  Her father, Tony Rhea and stepmother Jean.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 3:00 PM at

Stoney Creek Cemetery with Pastor David Duncan officiating.

Friends may come by the funeral home Thursday or Friday from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM or Saturday from 9:00 until 1:00 PM to pay their respects.

William Harvey Urbahns Jr., age 58, of Roanoke Rapids, NC died Saturday, August 1, 2014 at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, NC.

Harvey was born July 16, 1956 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was preceded in death by his father William Harvey “Bill” Urbahns Sr., his son Dustin “Dusty” Urbahns, his grandparents, Walter and Gloria Urbahns and George and Ola Storey.

He is survived by his mother, Betsy Storey Urbahns, his daughter Lisa Urbahns, his sister, Tammy U. Yarborough and her husband Jody and two step-children, Michelle Jenkins and David Mooney. His nephew, Chris Bradley. Five grandchildren, Dylan Johnston, Haleigh and Brianna Parks, Leland Griffin and Samuel Urbahns. His uncles, Jimmy Storey and Paul Urbahns. His aunts, Claudine Andress and Florence Nelson.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Michael Mooneyham officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Martha Davis Rose, age 88 of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away Friday, August 8, 2014 at Roanoke Rapids Health Care in Roanoke Rapids.

Mrs. Rose was born December 16, 1925, in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Nezzie G. Davis and Nannie Wade Davis. She was also preceded in death by a sister Pat Little and her brothers Charles Davis, Jimmie Davis and Stanlie Davis.

She is survived by her husband, J.B. Rose. Her daughter and son-in law Cindy and Bruce Manning of Roanoke Rapids; her sister, Iola Gay and her husband Kenneth of Franklin, VA; her sister-in-laws Yvonne Davis of Newport News, VA and Gwen Davis of Tavares. Florida; her granddaughter, Melissa Moseley and her husband David of Roanoke Rapids; five great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Chuck Davis officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday beginning at

1:00 PM prior to services.

Mr. Thomas Jefferson Pierce age 94, of Aulander, NC died Sunday, August 10, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Pierce was born February 6, 1920 in Norfolk, VA, the son of the late Nathan Pierce and Sarah Jane Mansfield Pierce.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Della Terry Pierce.

He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Pierce Askew and her husband Wilbur of Ahoskie, NC and Judy Pierce Garrett and her husband Ray of Aulander, NC.  Two sisters, Margie Dozier of Chesapeake, VA and Dorothy Evans of Ahoskie, NC.  His step brother, James Lassiter of Aulander, NC.  Five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church in Ahoskie, NC with Rev. Ray Faircloth Sr. officiating.  Burial will follow at Job Cemetery.

Mary Louise Pearce Bozard

Mrs. Mary Louise Peace Bozard age 84, of Skippers, VA died Thursday at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia, VA.

Mrs. Bozard was born January 23, 1930 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late Robert Leake Peace and Dollie Mae Demby Peace.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Curtis Bozard Sr., two children, John Lewis Bozard and Robert Glenn “Fred” Bozard, two sisters, Dean Peace and Juanita Cone, three brothers, George “Buck” Peace, Ray Peace and Henry Peace.

She is survived by her children, William Curtis Bozard of Pennsylvania, Donna Bozard, Mary Balmer, Marcy Woodruff, Alan Keith “Zeke” Bozard, Michael “Bo” Bozard and Jeff Bozard all of Emporia, VA.

Her sisters, Francis Harlow of Henderson, NC and Jean Crabtree of Rocky Mount, NC.  Her brothers, William Peace of Florence, SC, Tom Peace of Rocky Mount, NC, Raymond Peace of Nashville, NC, John Peace of Rocky Mount, NC and Doug Peace of Spring Hope, NC.  Six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

 Mrs. Ruby Thacker Kirkland, age 89, of Gaston passed away peacefully on Friday, August 22, 2014.

Mrs. Thacker was born January 25, 1925 in Brunswick County, VA, the daughter of the late Lillie Whitby Thacker and James Wilson Thacker.  She was a homemaker and a seamstress and was a member of Gaston Baptist Church.

Ruby was pre-ceded in death by her husband, Eural Edward Kirkland and nine siblings; Rosa T. Clary, Hettie T. Cannon, Bertha T. Conner, Lonnie J. Thacker, Norvie E. Thacker, Seamon K. Thacker, Doma T Skipper, Audrey Thacker, and Adrienne L. Caish.

She is survived by her children, Linda K. Carpenter (Kirby) of Wendell, NC, Ronald W. Kirkland (Marilyn) of Roanoke Rapids and Penny K. Claiborne (W.C.) of Gaston; Six grandchildren, Jason Carpenter, Rachel Carpenter Bottomed (Kevin), Joseph Carpenter, Travis Kirkland, April Conner Gill (Chris), and Shana Conner Sparrow; and six great grandchildren, Nathan, Nicolas and Nash Bottomley, Liam and Gwen Gill, and Zoë Sparrow.

A graveside service will be held Monday, August 25, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids on Monday, August 25, 2014 from 12:30 until 1:30 PM prior to services.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, 525 Becker Drive, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 or to Hampton Manor Assisted Living, 320 Broughton Street, Gaston, NC 27832.

The family wishes to express heir appreciation to the staff of Hampton Manor Assisted Living during their mother’s residency at the facility and to Community Care and Hospice for the special care they provided.

Mrs. Tula Clarke Brigman age 96, formerly of Enfield, NC died Tuesday, August 26, 2014 in Rocky Mount, NC.

Mrs. Brigman was born August 3, 1918 in Bertie County, NC, the daughter of the late James Elias Clarke and Lizzie Parker Clarke.  She was also predeceased by her first husband Robert Alton Gossett and her second husband A.J. “Jack” Brigman, her brother James Gurley Clarke and two sisters, Lorena Pearl Clarke and Ruby Clarke Conner Futrell. She was a member of Enfield Baptist Church.

She is survived by her step children, Sue B. Belo, Jewell Hopkin, Robert Alton “Bobby” Gossett Jr., and Patsy Holt Harris.   A daughter-in-law Margie Elk Brigman. Her nieces, Carolyn Askew, Linda Minton, Sadie Clarke Blackmon and a nephew James “Jim” Carlton Connor.

Graveside services will be held, Friday, August 29, 2014 at 4:00 PM at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC with Rev. Kerry Peeler officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Enfield Baptist Church, Enfield, NC 27823.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.
