Leatha Alston Glasgow

Mrs. Leatha Alston Glasgow, age 81 of Enfield, NC passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Glasgow was born June 17, 1932 in Halifax County, NC the daughter of the late Robert Fort Alston and Myra Charlotte Wood Alston.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Charles Lindburg Glasgow.

She was like a mama to all of her Daycare children and very active in her church. She loved her yard and her flowers, especially her Irises.

She is survived by her children Terry Block (John) of Florida, Judy

Pearson (C.W.) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Carol Shuttle (Bobby) of Greensboro, NC and Charles Glasgow Jr. of West Virginia. Seven grandchildren, Robbie Glasgow, Ericka Maksymyuk, Barbara Barkley, Alston Pearson, Frances Sanders, Tristen Shuttle and Alexis Shuttle. Five great grandchildren. Three sisters, Ethel Glasgow (Robert) of Weldon, NC, Nancy Melton (J.D.) of Creswell, NC and Dorothy Davidson of Halifax, NC.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM

at Enfield Baptist Church with Rev. Marc Sanders and Rev. Kerry Peeler officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield.

The family will receive friends at the church from 9:00 AM until service time Saturday and other times at Judy Pearson’s home in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

Troy Ellis Davis

Troy Ellis Davis, Jr. age 81, passed away October 2, 2013 at his home.

Troy was born January 26, 1932 in Perkins, Oklahoma the son of the late Troy Ellis Davis, Sr. and Margaret Meadows Davis.

Troy enjoyed and loved the sport of bowling. He won numerous awards and later was inducted into the Tidewater Bowler’s Hall of Fame which was a big accomplishment. In bowling perfect games to shooting tournaments and leaving people broke after beating them in bowling pot games, Troy is truly one of Tidewaters best bowlers and will be missed by many.

Survivors include his very special friends Doug Davidson and wife Betty of Aulander, NC. His adopted nieces and nephews Jackie Bonis, Rebecca Bonis and Doug Davidson, Jr. and Christine Davidson. Also many special bowling friends from Tidewater Virginia.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Troy will be held at a later date.

Al Oscar Davis, age 66 of Murfreesboro, NC passed away October 8, 2013 at his home.

Al was born August 9, 1947 in Hertford County North Carolina the son of the late Oscar Davis, Jr. and Nell Vinson Davis.

Survivors include his wife Janet Marie New Davis of Murfreesboro, NC; his two daughters, Janet Marie Davis Bryant of Aulander, NC and Rose Ann Davis Mizelle and husband Billy of Windsor, NC; one brother Larry Davis and his wife Susan of Murfreesboro, NC; one sister Joan Dixon and husband Jerry of Murfreesboro, NC; four grandchildren Tiffany, Dustin, Bill and Justin; one great-grandchild Jaylen Mizelle; one step-daughter Martha Leyda and husband Mark of Murfreesboro, NC. Also several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Friday October 11, 2013 at 2: 00 P.M. at Meherrin Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Josh Parsons officiating.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M.

Franklin Lewis Ferguson

Mr. Franklin Lewis Ferguson age 76 of Severn, NC died Thursday, October 10, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Ferguson was born July 27, 1937 in Greensville County, VA the son of the late William F. Ferguson and Evelyn Hyde Ferguson.  

He was also predeceased by his brothers and sisters, William F. Ferguson Jr., Carl Ferguson, Marguerite F. DeForest, Regional Ferguson, Alice F. Stoffell and Julian Ferguson.

Mr. Ferguson retired as Northampton County Tax Administrator in 2003 and formerly worked for Johnson Manufacturing.

He was an active member of Severn Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon, former Chairman of the Board of Deacons and a Sunday School teacher and also a member of the Town of Severn Board of Commissioners.  He was past President of The Ruritan Club and a member of nearly forty years.

He also served four years of service to his country in the US Navy.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gail H. Ferguson. His children, Franklin Lewis Ferguson Jr. and his wife Caroline of Marietta, Georgia, Marcia F. Huggins and special friend Jeff Whitley of Fitzgerald, Georgia and Dawn Rene’ Ferguson of Severn, NC. One brother, Stan Ferguson of Emporia, VA.

Four grandchildren, Hannah Huggins, Holly Huggins, Sarah Ferguson, and Emily Ferguson. Also, many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Severn Baptist Church with Rev. Brent Hobbs officiating.

The family will receive friends at Severn Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

In Lieu of Flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Severn Baptist Church, Severn, NC 27876 or to Vidant Hospice.

Edward Lewis 'Pee Wee' Phipps

Mr. Edward Lewis “Pee Wee” Phipps age 85 of Murfreesboro, NC died Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Vidant Hospital in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Phipps was born February 7, 1928 in Beckley, West Virginia, the son of the late Homer Lee Phipps and Mamie Virginia Smith Phipps. He was also predeceased by his wife Anna Inez Phipps.

Mr. Phipps was a World War II Army Veteran and the Korean War and served his country with the 82nd Airborne. He was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church and retired from the NC Dept. of Transportation after 38 years of service.

He is survived by his daughter Faye Jenkins and her husband Joe of Conway, NC, his sons, Ronnie Phipps and his wife Betty of Rich Square, NC and Emory Keith Phipps and his wife Katherine of Edenton, NC. His sister, Louise Phipps Copeland of Murfreesboro. Also five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one great grandchild, many step grandchildren, many step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Friday, November 1, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC with Rev. Lee Canipe and Rev. Gene Asbell officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Thursday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

James 'Jimmy' Robert Warren

James “Jimmy” Robert Warren, age 69 passed away November 3, 2013 at Rich Square Health Care in Rich Square, NC.

Jimmy was born June 17, 1944 in Northampton County, NC the son of the late Robert Edgar Warren and Martha Evelyn Allen Warren. He was also preceded in death by one sister Jane Warren Ivey. He served in the Vietnam War and was by trade a carpenter.

Survivors include his wife Brenda Vaughan Warren of Rich Square, NC; His two daughters Angie Warren Todd (Ricky) of Rich Square, NC and Beverly Warren Ellen (George) of Rocky Mount, NC; Six grandchildren Stephanie Todd, Mandy Jackson, Michael Todd, Tessa Tyler, Robert Ellen and Nicholas Ellen; Two Great-Grandchildren Alex Hernandez and Noah Todd; One sister Margie Warren Campbell (Jake) of Conway, NC and a very special family dog “Henry”.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery in Roxobel, NC with Rev. Doug Spivey officiating.

Joseph Shepherd Harrell, age 89 Ahoskie, NC passed away November 2, 2013 at the Ahoskie House in Ahoskie.

Joseph was born July 18, 1924 in Bertie County North Carolina the son of the late Josiah Harrell and Nettie Cleora Copeland Harrell. He was a farmer for many years.

Survivors include his two sisters June Edwards (Junius) of Galatia, NC and Sue Parker (McCoy) of Edenton, NC; His two sisters-in-law Thelma Hobbs of Ahoskie, NC and Cora Lee Harrell of Portsmouth, VA; His special companions Shirley Harrell and Laura Jean Harrell. Also many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Monday, November 4, 2013 at Ahoskie Cemetery at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Greg Hurdle officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service Monday November 4, 2013 from 11:00 until 1:00 P.M. at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC which is handling the arrangements. We will then proceed to the Ahoskie Cemetery in funeral possession after the visitation.

Bois B. Cartwright

Bois B. Cartwright, 82, of Hertford County, NC, passed away on Nov. 9th, 2013 She was a retired school teacher,  a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church in Como, NC, and an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her two sons, David of Boston, MA, and Edward of Winterville, NC. She is also survived by Edward’s wife, Deborah, and her two grandchildren, Laura and Meredith. 

Mrs. Cartwright requested cremation and a small service to be led by her son David at her beloved Buckhorn Baptist Church. The Service was held as she requested on Nov. 13th.

Instead of flowers, the family requests gifts in her memory sent to Buckhorn Baptist Church, PO Box 67 Como, NC 27818. Notes of condolence may be sent to the Cartwright Family, 118 Knight Drive, Winterville, NC 28590.

John Locke Mitchell, age 86 of Ahoskie, NC passed away November 12, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.

John was born September 4, 1927 in Hertford County North Carolina the son of the late George Locke Mitchell and Gladys Jernigan Clements.

He was also preceded in death by his wife Shirley Jean Mitchell, his brother Bob Mitchell, his daughter Mariam Connor and grandson Brandon Mitchell. John was an Army Veteran of twenty nine years, a Korean War Veteran and Viet Nam Veteran.

Survivors include his two sons; Randall Mitchell of Greenville, NC and Gene Mitchell (Patty) of Roxobel, NC; His daughter Ann Blake (John) of Charlotte, NC; His three grandchildren Courtney Mitchell, Sheri Lassiter and Jennifer Brock and his four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 15, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at Sandy Run Baptist Church in Roxobel, NC with Rev. Dave Rimel officiating. Burial will follow in Harrellsville Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Faye Dickens Rawls

Mrs. Faye Dickens Rawls age 80, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 15, 2013.

Mrs. Rawls was born January 5, 1933 in Bertie County, NC the daughter of the late Felix Edward Dickens and Amanda Dickens. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband Robert Harold Rawls, a son, H. Keith Rawls, sisters, Audrey Bunting, Emily Long, Flora Glenn Hardy, Brenda Hardy and her brothers, Laverne Dickens and Haywood Dickens.

Known by many names, whether it was Faye, Mama, Granny or Miss Faye, she was a loving unselfish woman who exemplified what it means to be a caregiver. Her dedication and sacrifice for her family were only exceeded by the love she had for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  

Her sweet and humble spirit truly affected all who crossed her path.  She will remain always an example to those who loved her so dearly. She was a member of Ebenezer Assembly of God Church. .

She is survived by her sons Michael Rawls and his wife Cecile of Greenville, NC, Mark Rawls and his wife Marie of Windsor, NC, David Rawls of Williamston, NC and daughter-in-law Jennie Rawls of Williamston, NC. 

Her grandchildren, Brian Rawls, Valerie Verdin, Stacey Wiggins, Morgan Nichols, Chase Rawls, Elizabeth Revels and Rachel Rawls.  Her great grandchildren, Isabella Wiggins, Ashton Wiggins and Mariah Verdin.  Her sisters, Mary Virginia Jernigan, Joyce Brett and Anne Futrell.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 18, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Ebenezer Assembly of God Church with Rev. Timmy Parker and Rev. Ralph Rawls officiating.  Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC.

The family will receive friends Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Ebenezer Assembly of God Church  from 4:00 until 5:30 PM.

William Franklin 'Buck' Pittman

William Franklin “Buck” Pittman, age 82 passed away December 31, 2013 at Hampton Manor in Gaston, NC.

Buck was born December 20, 1931 in Edgecombe County North Carolina the son of the late Frank Pittman and Mary Lilly Pittman Gurganus. He was also preceded in death by his wife Betty Jean Rook Pittman and a grandchild Shelby Renee Pittman. He sold automobiles for many years and retired as an insurance salesman. He was a true jack of all trades and a people person.

Survivors include his son; Steven Ray Pittman (Frances) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his daughter Mitzi Pittman Cahoon (Lee) of Gaston, NC; four grandchildren Mandy Moore Grizzard of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Kimberly Dawn Johnson (Richard) of Gaston, NC, Steven Kenneth Pittman (April) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, eight grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. A special brother in Christ James Roy Harris of Emporia, VA.

Frances Todd Farless passed away on December 28, 2013 in Shelbyville, TN.

Frances was born July 26, 1937 in Bertie County, North Carolina the daughter of the late Shirley Worth Todd and Sally Lucille Askew Todd. She was also preceded in death by her sister Janice Castellow.

Survivors include her husband of fifty eight years James Robert Farless of Shelbyville, TN; Her brothers Gene Worth Todd of Scotland Neck, NC and Freddie O’Neal Todd of Merry Hill, NC.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC with Rev. Jeff Russell officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC prior to the service from 9:30 until 10:30 AM. We will then go in a funeral procession to the cemetery.

David was born December 22, 1939 in Portsmouth, VA the son of the late David Lafayette Wilkerson, Sr. David was a Foreman for Exxon Gas in Chesapeake, Va.

He is survived by his wife Patricia Ann Green Wilkerson of Jackson, NC and his mother Rosa Lee Kee Wilkerson.

Lois was born March 19, 1922 in Mentor, Ohio the daughter of the late Jack Summerville and Blanche Eley Summerville.

Survivors include her two daughters; Toni Grimm (Harry) of Arlington, VA and Peggy Bullock Bright of Jackson, NC; her two sons Bobby Bullock of Idaho and Larry Bullock (Sally) of Jackson, NC; her grandchildren Lois, Lee, Ray, Travis, Shasta, Brandy and Sammie Jo; fifteen great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Lois will be held Monday, January 6, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Cemetery with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.

Otto Benjamin Wright, age 75 passed away on January 1, 2014 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Otto was born September 27, 1938 in Brunswick County, Virginia the son of the late John Givens Wright and Patsy Lynche Wright.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Geneva Pierce Wright and a son Ricky Smith.  

Otto worked many years in the plastic industry as a lead mechanic. He worked very hard during his life and was a loving father too all his children.

Survivors include his two daughters Brenda Cox of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Linda Johnson (Glenn) of Fairfield, CA; his two sons Otto Benjamin Wright, II of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Danny Smith of Germany. Ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 5, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC which is handling the arrangements with Rev. Barry Garner officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM Sunday.

Clifford Kenneth Lyon, age 67 passed away on January 1, 2014 at his home.

He was born August 5, 1946 in Bristol, CT the son of the late Clifford Stanley Lyon and Norma Elaine Peterson Lyon.


He worked many years as a driver for the state of Connecticut. He enjoyed his years living on Lake Gaston after he retired.

Survivors include his wife Janet Krawczyk Lyon of Henrico, NC and his son Andrew Paklos of Gaston, NC. Left to cherish his memory also is Clifford’s many loving friends.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Clifford will be held, Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Dennis Joyner officiating. Burial will be private at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery in Gaston, NC.

Lionel Frederick Northington

Mr. Lionel Frederick Northington age 87 died January 3, 2014.

Mr. Northington was born March 12, 1926 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Lionel Hill Northington and Mary Virginia Fleming Northington.

He was also predeceased by his wife, Sandra Edwards Northington, a daughter Linda Northington, a brother Rudolph Northington and a sister, Saluda Poe.

Mr. Northington graduated from Wake Forest University, but was a devoted fan of the Carolina Tar Heels basketball team. He retired from Commerical Credit Corporation and served his country in the US Army during World War II.

Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Northington of Roanoke Rapids, a brother Thomas Northington of Greensboro, NC, a sister Virginia Debusk of Blacksburg, VA and a brother-in-law, Ross Edwards of Roanoke Rapids. Also numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 6, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Cory Oliver officiating.

Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 4:00 until 5:30 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

John William Vaughan

John William Vaughan

Mr. John William Vaughan age 84, of Margarettsville passed away Sunday, January 5, 2013 at his home.

Known to family and friends as “John Bill”, his favorite title was “PaPa”.  John was born in Margarettsville, NC on November 3, 1929.

He attended Seaboard High School, graduated from Chowan College and attended Wake Forest University.

He was a member of Margarettsville Baptist Church and served as a Deacon.

After service to his country in the United States Army, John farmed for many years and was retired from International Paper Company in Roanoke Rapids. He enjoyed gardening, loved the Carolina Tarheels, but his greatest joy was spending time with his grandson.  They were best friends.

John was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Griffin Vaughan, his parents William Edgar Vaughan and Geraldine Wade Vaughan, and his son Jerry William Vaughan.

He is survived by his son Neal Vaughan and wife Karen of Margarettsville, his grandson Joshua Vaughan of Greenville and nieces, nephews and cousins he held dear in his heart.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Seaboard Cemetery in Seaboard, NC with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 7:00 until 8:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson.

Mrs. Helen Davis Gathright, age 88 of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away January 7, 2014 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Helen was born June 17, 1925 in Warren County North Carolina the daughter of the late Clyde Alexander Davis and Ruby Oliva Parker Davis. She was also preceded in death by her first husband Alfonzo Wright; her daughter, Teresa Wright Farrar; her sister-in-law, Lorene W. Warren and her four sisters; Frances, Dorothy, Emma and Bessie.

Survivors include her husband Emmett Gathright of Richmond, VA; her daughter Linda K. Wright of Roanoke Rapids; her son Adam Davis Wright of Roanoke Rapids; her brother Robert Davis of Richmond, VA; her two sisters Evelyn Shaffer of Roanoke Rapids and Ruby Newsome (Herman) of Littleton, NC; her three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also several nieces and nephews. Her special friend and caretaker Sara Rose of Roanoke Rapids and her special beloved dog ”Tess.”  “Helen really loved those Wright Boys.”

Graveside services will be held Friday, January 10, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Kurt Taylor, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Roanoke Rapids Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Roanoke Rapids Volunteer Fire Department.
