Shelby Jean Outlaw Terry age 77, of Aulander, NC passed away on October 11, 2014 at the Ahoskie House in Ahoskie, NC.

Shelby was born on November 16, 1936 in Hertford County North Carolina the daughter of the late Vera Rayford Outlaw and Willie Leon Outlaw.

She was also preceded in death by one sister Dorothy Robinson and one brother-in-law Paul “Boogie” Robinson. She was a very devoted volunteer and charter member of the Millennium Civic Club.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years Mark “Tomcat” Terry of Aulander, NC; Her son Steve Terry and wife Jennifer of Kelford, NC; Her three grandchildren Martin Terry of Winton, NC, Aaron Clark of Kelford, NC and Nathan Clark of Conway, NC; Her two nephews Richard “Dickie” Robinson and his wife Gloria of Lewiston, NC and Ronnie Robinson of Arizona, also many loving family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Taylor Latham officiating. Burial will follow in Job Cemetery in Aulander, NC.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC Tuesday, October 14, 2014 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home.

Beatrice Irene Eure Little, age 86 passed away October 15, 2014 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.

Beatrice was born December 31, 1927 in Halifax County North Carolina the daughter of the late Lemuel Otha Eure and Cherry Louise Wyatt Eure.

She was also preceded in death by her two husbands William Norman Edwards, James Emery Little, Sr., five siblings and one son William Otha “Butch” Edwards.

Survivors include her two daughters; Phyllis Goddard of Greensboro, NC and Connie Bridgers (Johnny) of Conway, NC; Her three sons, James Little, Jr. of Gasburg, VA, Mickey Little (Melonie) of Emerald Isle, NC and Timmy Little of Gumberry, NC; Her thirteen grandchildren, Richard, Robert and Thomas Goddard, Tammy, Wendy and Bill Edwards, Crystal Gayle, Jamie Little, Ben Bridgers, Marsha and George Little, Amanda and Timmy Little, Jr. Also many nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. 

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Beatrice Irene Eure Little will be held, Sunday October 19, 2014 from 1:00 until 2:00 PM. at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC. Burial will be held private.

Mrs. Evelyn Allen Stephenson age 75, of Jackson, NC passed away Monday, October 20, 2014.

Mrs. Stephenson was born January 23, 1939 in Emporia, VA, the daughter of the late George W. Allen and Lillie Rose Grizzard Allen.  She was also predeceased by her son, Jon Christopher Stephenson, a brother, Earl Dean Allen and a sister, Cornelia Ann Allen.  She was a faithful member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Charles Stephenson. Hert sons, Joey Stephenson and his wife Carla of Seaboard, NC, Jeff Stephenson of White Lake, NC and James Stephenson and his wife Brooke of Jackson, NC.  Three grandchildren, Carly Ellen Stephenson, Jon Fredrick Stephenson and Jenna Claire Stephenson.  Three sisters, Shirley Everette of Emporia, VA, Georgia Rose Stainback of Franklin, VA and Jean Wright of White Plains, VA.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Seaboard Cemetery in Seaboard, NC with Rev. Keith Thomason and Rev. Craig Janney officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Viola Reaves Hurst Daughtry

Viola Reaves Hurst Daughtry, age 91 of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away on October 26, 2014 at Signature Health and Rehab in Roanoke Rapids.

Viola was born October 11, 1923 in Halifax County North Carolina the daughter of the late Dallas Dalton Reaves and Mary Faison Reaves.

Viola was predeceased in death by her two loving and devoted husbands, Elbert Hurst of 46 years and Earnest Daughtry for 13 years, a brother Phillip Reaves and an infant son Elbert Hurst, Jr.

Mrs. Daughtry was employed for 29 years at JP Stevens Company and remained very active until her recent illness.

She was a charter member of New Testament Christian Church where she became a mother and grandmother to many.

She was a dear friend to many, too many to mention. Viola possessed a loving and benevolent spirit, always putting others before herself. Not to mention the wonderful cook and often demonstrated her love by preparing food for family, friends and neighbors. Her up most love for Christ could be seen in all that she did. 

Survivors include her four devoted daughters; Dianne Hurst, Bonnie Hale (Linwood), Lynne Smith (Pete) and Bettye Daughtry all of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Her four grandchildren Dana Mitchell (Gary) of Emporia, VA, Art Rook (Angela) of Hanover, VA, Wayne Hale (Debbie) and Tommy Hale (Sara) both of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Her six great-grandchildren Megan and Bridget Mitchell, Jesse and Savannah Rook, Johnathan and Jamie Hale; Her one great great-grandchild Kaleb Hale; Her four sisters Rose Frank of Richmond, VA, Doris Taylor ( Harvey), Shirley Hasty and Betsy Korkuc all of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Also numerous nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 11:00 AM at New Testament Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Pastor Christopher Hux and Pastor Daniel West officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home of Pete and Lynne Smith. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Johnson University ( formerly Johnson Bible College) 7900 Johnson Drive Knoxville, TN 37998, which she always loved and supported. Their mission was close to her heart. A special thanks to the staff at Signature Health and Rehab in Roanoke Rapids, NC for the care they gave to Viola over these past three months. Many went above and beyond their call of duty to make all the family as comfortable as possible.

Todd was born April 8, 1964, the son of Helen Jenkins and the late Jesse Jenkins.

He is survived by his fiance Diana Sullivan, his daughter, Tiffany Grazuties, his mother, Helen Jenkins. and a brother Robert Jenkins. Also many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 7:30 PM at Gonce Funeral Service, 4001 Ritchie Hwy, Baltimore, MD. Interment services will be held Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Aulander Cemetery, Aulander, NC.

Mary Louise Hartless age 80, of Murfreesboro, NC passed away on November 3, 2014 at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Mary was born March 25, 1934 in Norfolk, VA the daughter of the late Clarence Linwood Addison and Sara Jane Balson Addison.

Survivors include her two sisters; Doris White and husband Buddy of Suffolk, VA and Dorothy Laymon and husband Mark of Great Bridge, VA. Her four children; Patricia Carter, Gilbert Lee Ivey, Sr., Geania Coggins and Alan Ivey. Her ten grandchildren; Jeremy Coggins, Jefferey Coggins, Joyce Coggins, Becky Alston, Lee Ivey, Jr., Joey Ivey, Michael Ewell, Charles Skenes, Johnny Wimbley and Brenda Wimbley.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Roy Faison officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC.

Viola “Ruth” Cutlip Harris age 76, of Ahoskie, NC passed away on November 3, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Ruth was born April 17, 1939 in Hertford County, NC the daughter of the late Charlie Cutlip and Annie Sue Davis Cutlip. She was also preceded in death by her sister Mary Brinkley. 

Survivors include her daughter Linda Marinov of Roanoke, VA; Her sisters Mildred Claar of Alabama, Florence Perlin of Arizona, Patricia Jean Cutlip of California and Barbra Cutlip of Nevada; Her brothers Charlie Glenn Cutlip of Winton, NC and David Cutlip of New York, New York; Her three grandchildren Rebecca Harris of Franklin, VA, Josh Harris of Dalton, GA and Alex Marinov of Suffolk, VA and six great-grandchildren. 

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ruth Harris will be held Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC.

James Henry Harrup

James Henry Harrup age 77 of Valentines, VA passed away on November 6, 2014 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA.

James was born May 22, 1937 in Southampton County, Virginia the son of the late Henry Harrup and Francis Pulley Johnson Harrup.

He was also preceded in death by his sisters Mattie Hux and Emma Pierce. James was truly a jack of all trades, he worked mostly as a carpenter. He was a loving husband and father and a great friend to many people.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years Judy Harrup of Valentines, VA; His son Larry James Harrup of Valentines, VA; His nephews Ernest Hux, Jimmy “Buddy” Hux, Ronnie Hux and Junior Grant; His nieces Teresa Turner and Kathy “Sissy” Rhodes.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Pleasant Hill Christian Church Cemetery in Gasburg, VA with Rev. Greg Hand officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 PM until 2:30 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Patricia L. Henningsen, 69, died on Sunday, November 9, 2014 after a long illness.  

Pat was born in Taft, CA, but lived the majority of her life in Virginia Beach.  

Pat graduated from Princess Anne High School and the College of the Albemarle.  She was a retired nurse from Sentara Virginia Beach General. 

Pat is survived by her children, Brian Henningsen and his wife, Glenda and Darrick Henningsen; sister, Sandy Sperry and her husband Tom; grandchildren, Jamica, Rory, Deborah and Brian, Jr. along with five great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 5-7pm, Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Kellum Funeral Home in Virginia Beach.  A graveside service will be held at 11am on Wednesday in Jackson, NC at the town cemetery. 

Pat’s family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at The Memory Center and her dear friend, Myrtle Vick and her family for all their support during her illness.  Memorial donation may be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA.  Online condolences may be offered at www.kellumfuneralhome.com.

Doris Martin Vinson

Doris Martin Vinson, 88, passed away on November 12, 2014 in Greenville, North Carolina.  

She was born in Northampton County to Grover and Essie Martin.

She is predeceased in death by her brothers, Charlie Martin, Clarence Martin and  Sidney Martin, and sisters, Ella Mae Watson, Janie Outland, Mary Calhoun and Mildred Martin, as well as her husband, Wingate Cola Vinson.

Mrs. Vinson is survived by her children, Sandra Noyes and husband, Jeffrey, of  Macon, Georgia, Elaine Kitchen and husband, Larry, of Richmond, Virginia, W. C. 

Vinson and wife, Wanda, and Ricky Vinson and wife, Janice, all of Murfreesboro, North Carolina.  Also surviving are grandchildren, Tiffany Mulle and husband,  Tom, of Houston, Texas, April Fowler and husband, Danny, of Sedley, Virginia,  Jason Vinson and wife, Ashley, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Kevin Vinson of  Chesapeake, Virginia, Derric Vinson and wife, April, of Rocky Mount, North  Carolina, and Somer Vinson of Chesapeake, Virginia, along with nine  great-grandchildren.

She is further survived by her brothers, Kelly Martin and wife, Millie, and  Dennis Martin, all of Milwaukee, North Carolina, and sisters, Gladys Wheeler and  husband, Grady, Myrtle Revelle, all of Goldsboro, North Carolina, and Lillian  Howerton and husband, Bruce, of Rich Square, North Carolina.

Mrs. Vinson's career included many years at Talon, Inc. in Woodland, North  Carolina, finishing her working career for the Murfreesboro Chamber of Commerce.  

She was a long-term member of Ashley's Grove Baptist Church. 

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Ashley's Grove Baptist 

Church, Conway, North Carolina with Rev. James Hester officiating.  Burial will follow at the church  cemetery.

Visitation will be at 1:00 in the church Fellowship Hall, with the service beginning at 2:00.  Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, North Carolina is handling  the 

service.

Ezra Samuel Martin

Mr. Ezra Samuel Martin,  age 94 of Murfreesboro, NC died Friday, November 14, 2014.

Mr. Martin was born September 18, 1920 in Hertford County, NC, the son of the late Claude Martin and Mable Vick Martin. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mildred M. Martin, his siblings, Lucille M. Hoggard, Hazel M. Ward, Jessie Helen Midgette, Gilbert Martin and Claude Kitchen Martin.

He was a US Army Veteran that served in the 7th Army, 103rd Division, 410th Infantry from 1944 until 1946.  He served his country in France, Germany and Austria.  He worked for many years with Hill Chevrolet-Pontiac in Murfreesboro and then worked for many years with Title D.  He was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church. 

He is survived by his daughter Diane Martin Seidemann and her husband Michael of Kenner, Louisiana. Two grandchildren, Ryan Michael Seidemann  and his wife Ericka and Erin Diane Seidemann.  Two great grandchildren Michael and Elizabeth Seidemann.   Also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Murfreesboro Baptist Church with Rev. Lee Canipe officiating.  Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Saturday from 7:00 until 8:00 PM. The family will also receive friends Sunday at the Murfreesboro Baptist Church Cemetery after the services at the cemetery.

Shirley Wood Crowder age 76 passed away Friday, November 14, 2014 at Northampton Nursing and Rehab Center in Jackson, NC.

Shirley was born February 2, 1938 the daughter of the late Lonnie Lee Wood and Odessa King Wood.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Henry Thomas Crowder, her granddaughter Jessica Louise Pope and her son-in-law Alton Eugene Pope. 

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Margaret Pope of Conway, NC; Her two sons Dale Thomas Crowder of Jackson, NC and Lonnie Eugene Crowder (Mary Alice) of Seaboard, NC; Her five grandchildren Tracy Forrester, Allison Byrd, Tommy Crowder, Marie Crowder and Gene Pope; Her three great grandchildren Jase Pope, Jessa Pope and Alex Powell. Also many loving friends and other family members. 

Graveside services will be held Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Cemetery in Jackson, NC with Rev. David Foster officiating.

Don Gilford “Paw-Paw” Abshire, age 80 passed away November 27, 2014 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.

Don was born September 20, 1934 in Whitesville, West Virginia the son of the late Curtis Ronald Abshire and Liza Garnet Richards Abshire.

He was also preceded in death by his wife Patricia Ann Dickens Abshire and a brother Ronald “Sonny” Abshire. 

Survivors include his brother Jackie Abshire (Mary Jo) of Orange County, Florida; His four children Chubby Abshire of Greenville, SC, Kip Abshire and Les Abshire both of Wake Forest, NC and Donna Inscoe of Littleton, NC; His ten grandchildren Kameron Abshire, Dr. Kyle Abshire, Kristopher Abshire, Koy Dillard, Kari Cross, Joshua Abshire, Claire Abshire, Cole Abshire, Mari Lydia Abshire and Justin Inscoe; His five great-grandchildren Michaela Abshire, Henry Abshire, Anna Dillard, Paityn Cross and Elijah Abshire.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of  Military Veteran Don “Paw-Paw” Abshire will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Margaret Horrell officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors in Cedarwood Cemetery.

 Mr. Fred Burns Jr., age 67 of Conway, NC died Monday, December 1, 2014.

Mr. Burns was born August 15, 1946 in Potecasi, NC, the son of the late Fred Burns Sr. and Pearl Jenkins Burns.  He was also predeceased by his siblings, Emma Rae Beard and James Earl Burns.

He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War in the US Army. He retired from Resinall Corporation after thirty years of service. He loved the game of golf.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Brenda Thomas Burns.  His daughter, Brooke Burns Stephenson and her husband James and his beloved grandson, Jon Fredrick Stephenson.  Also his sister, Ann Burns Barnes.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Conway Cemetery, Conway, NC with Chaplain Bruce Dayton officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Brooke and James Stephenson.

Mr. James Walter “Buck” Cox age 84, of Jackson, NC died Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Buck was born November 11, 1930 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Walter Thomas Cox and Willie Jones Cox.  He was also preceded in death by his wife Selena Jernigan Cox.

He is survived by his daughters, Patricia C. Wood and her husband John, Brenda S. Cox, both of Jackson and Gail C. Murphy and her husband Charles of Rich Square.  His son Tom Cox of Conway, NC. Eight grandsons and five great grandchildren. His brother, Milton Ray “Pete” Cox and his wife Ann of Jackson, NC and sister-in-law Rosa Cox also of Jackson.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, December 7, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Cemetery with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.

Henry Earl Roye age 79, passed away December 12, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Henry was born January 29, 1935 in Canadian, Texas the son of the late Earlan Orestus Roye and Jewell Annette Mosteller Roye. 

He is survived by his wife Frances Ann Mangum Roye of Jackson, NC; His sons Johnathan Roye (Tera) of Lasker, NC, Tony Roye (Cynthia) of Chesapeake, VA and Bo Bo Roye (Kelly) of Jackson, NC; His daughter Teresa Britton (Andy) of Galatia, NC, eight grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. 

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Henry Roye will be held private at a later date.

Frances “Juanita” Marshall Sutton age 95, passed away on December 13, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Juanita was born September 17, 1919 in King George County Virginia the daughter of the late Adelaide DeShazo Marshall and George William Marshall. She was also preceded in death by her husband Irwin Reber Sutton.

Juanita was an avid member of Rosemary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Survivors include her son, Carroll Wayne Purks (Betty) of Rappahannock Academy, VA; Her two daughters Cynthia Purks Nichols of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Sherry Purks Melendez (Bennie) of Las Cruces, NM; Seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one step son Ralph Sutton of King George, VA and one step daughter Barbara Franklin of Raleigh, NC.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 19, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Covenant Funeral Home, 4801 Jefferson Davis Hwy Fredericksburg, VA 22408, with Rev. Dennis Newton officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 3702 Loren Drive Fredericksburg, VA 22408.

 Ronald Gay Goddard age 65 formerly of Seaboard, NC passed away December 20, 2014 at Rocky Mount Rehab Center in Rocky Mount, NC.

Ronald was born September 1, 1949 in Emporia, VA the son of the late Samuel Lewis Goddard and Helen Virginia Long Goddard. He worked many years as a driving instructor.

Survivors include his daughter Tarina Goddard Daughtridge of Rocky Mount, NC and a son Mike Goddard of Mt. Airy, Maryland. His brother Samuel Lewis Goddard, Jr. of Virginia and his uncle Joseph Goddard of Seaboard, NC.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ronald Goddard will be held at a later date.

Joyce Virginia Griffith Casper age 69 of Murfreesboro, NC passed away on December 26, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Casper was born December 24, 1945 in Hertford County North Carolina the daughter of the late Lucille Hedgepeth Vann and Nathaniel Griffith.

Joyce will be remembered first and fore most as a wonderful mother, wife and grandmother too her two boys. She was a dedicated member to Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church her entire life, too her community and those she served through home health care.

Survivors include her husband Bobby Ray Casper of Murfreesboro, NC; Daughter Tambra Vann Johnson and husband Michael of Winterville, NC and two grandsons Colton Blake Johnson and Gavin Michael Johnson; Step sons Kenneth Ray Casper and wife Andrea of Shallotte, NC and Bobby Deryl Casper also of Shallotte, NC; Two sisters Annie and Mildred; Three brothers Billy, Dennis and Bobby; Special sisters Katherine Skinner and Clonnie Frances; Sister-in-law Shirley Campbell; Brothers-in-law Richard Casper and his wife Carolyn and Wayne Casper.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church with Rev. David Ross and Rev. J.N. Baggett officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday, December 29, 2014 at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC from 6:00 until 8:00 PM

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church or Community Home Care & Hospice of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Per Mrs. Casper’s request if you choose to send flowers, please send those flowers that can be replanted to live on in her memory.

Virginia Lassiter Staples age 90 of Jackson passed away December 27, 2014 at Pine Forest Rest Home in Potecasi, NC.

Virginia was born December 27, 1924 in Northampton County North Carolina the daughter of the late Benjamin Cartland Lassiter and Gertie Maude Bryant Lassiter. Mrs. Staples was also preceded in death by her first husband Thomas Newsome, her second husband Luther “L.B.” Staples and her son Larry Newsome.

Survivors include her daughter Pamela Newsome Bennett and husband Eric of Selma, NC; Six grandchildren Jonathan Newsome and wife Christy of Lasker, NC, Phillip Newsome of Lasker, NC, Adam Newsome and his wife Jessica of Severn, NC, Heather Newsome Futrell and her husband Wynn of Murfreesboro, NC and Tillman and Oliva Bennett of Selma, NC and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Virginia Staples will be held Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Jackson Baptist Church at 11:00 AM with Rev. Warren Haizenberger officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.
