John Charles Stockley

John Charles Stockley, age 88 passed away February 17, 2015.

John was born May 18, 1926 in Michigan.

He was a retired veteran of the United States Navy and a police officer for thirteen years following his military service to our country.

Survivors include his son Adam Bennett Stockley of Portland, Maine.

A private service with military honors will be held at a later date.

Stanley Willie Vaughan

Stanley Willie Vaughan (77) passed away on Sunday, February 22, surrounded by family and friends.

Stanley was born April 21, 1937 in Potecasi to W.F. and Della Colston Vaughan.

Stanley was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Creeksville Baptist Church where he was affectionately known as “The Candy Man” by all the children.

He was President of Farmer’s Mutual Insurance (now Alliance Mutual Ins.) of Rich Square for over 30 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Peggy Babb Vaughan; son, Stanley Keith Vaughan and wife Edna of Knoxville, TN; daughter, Brenda Vaughan Jernigan and husband David of Fayetteville, NC; grandchildren Danielle Vaughan, Dustin Vaughan and wife Emily, Matthew Jernigan, Steven Jernigan and Riley Jernigan; great-grandson Hudson Keith Vaughan; several nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 6:30-8:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 11 AM at Creeksville Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Sloan and Rev. Johnny Richards officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Creeksville Baptist Church Mission Projects.

Fred Frank Swetley age 81 of Aulander, NC passed away February 24, 2015 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Fred was born June 6, 1933 in Bertie County North Carolina, the son of the late Frank Swetley and Lucille Hall Swetley.

Mr. Swetley was a talented carpenter working most of his life as a carpenter constructing many things from houses, decks, porches to fixing anything people requested of him.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister Evelyn Harrell of Ahoskie, NC; His four nieces Rachel Warren and her husband Ben of Murfreesboro, NC, Sheryl Harrell and husband Ashley of Colerain, NC, Anne Long and husband Mike of Eure, NC and Sue Hewitt of Ahoskie, NC; His two nephews Alan Harrell and his wife Frances of Ahoskie, NC and Kenny Harrell and his wife Michelle of Ahoskie, NC;  Also several great nieces and one great nephew.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Jim Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Hall-Rogerson Cemetery in Aulander, NC.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 AM until time of service.

Patsy Spence Doisey, age 52 of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away February 23, 2015 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA.

Patsy was born November 20, 1962 in Halifax County North Carolina the daughter of the late Calvin Spence and Nancy Lee Brown Spence. She was also preceded in death by her grandchild Cameron D. Newsome.

Patsy loved to spoil her grandchildren. She really enjoyed being around her grandchildren they were truly the light in her eyes. She also loved camping, going to the beach and watching her “soaps.”

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters Holly Doisey of Roanoke Rapids and Joyce Newsome and her husband Rodney of Dinwiddie, VA. Her brother Donnie Spence and his wife Glenda. Her six grandchildren Christian Doisey, Jordan, Jason, Kayla and Miranda Hernandez and Richard Spence.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 2, 2015 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC due to the inclement weather with Pastor David Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 am until time of service.

Walter Floyd Futrell Jr.

Mr. Walter Floyd Futrell Jr. age 74, of Jackson, NC died Monday, March 2, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Futrell was born January 5, 1941 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Walter Floyd Futrell Sr. and Neta Hargrove Futrell.

He worked for many years as manager of the ABC Store in Rich Square, worked for Carolina Aluminum, Davis and Company  in Conway and at the Piggly Wiggly. He was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Brenda Williams Futrell of the home and a brother, Charles Futrell of Wendell, NC.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, March 6, 2015 at  2:00 PM  at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rehoboth United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Margaret Lane Shepard Cooke, age 86 formerly of Ahoskie and Aulander, NC passed away March 7, 2015 at Golden Living Center — Elizabeth Adam Crump House in Glen Allen, VA.

She was born May 19, 1928 in Bertie County North Carolina the daughter of the late Oscar Shepard and Lottie Mae Askew Shepard.

Mrs. Cooke was also preceded in death by her husband Willie Abe Cooke.

She was a homemaker for many years taking care of her family whom she loved dearly.

Margaret had been living in Glen Allen, VA for some time now and was a member of Evangel Assembly of God Church in Glen Allen, VA.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Ivey Cooke Lassiter and husband Ray of Ahoskie, NC; Her son Oscar Wayne Cooke and wife Sharon of Richmond, VA; Her four grandchildren Matthew Cooke, Amanda Cooke, Danielle Urbe and Kenneth Lassiter and her twelve great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Aulander Cemetery at 1:00 PM with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM. We will then go in a funeral procession to Aulander Cemetery.

John Patrick "€œJohnny"€ Fowler II, 59, of Roanoke Rapids, departed this life on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.

Johnny was the son of the late Calvin W. Fowler and Acree Jones Fowler.

He is survived by his wife, Shelia Gail Fowler; his children, Samuel Nick Brown and Jessica Dawn Fowler; five grandchildren; his mother, Acree Fowler Scott; two brothers and one sister.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 9 at Maranatha Baptist Church on Zoo Road in Roanoke Rapids  with Rev. Mike Little and Rev. Howard Kendrick officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

Minnie Marcella Wray Moore

Minnie Marcella Wray Moore age 80, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, March 13, 2015.

Mrs. Moore was born July 4, 1934, the daughter of the late Robert Lee Wray and Mary Ola Jordan Wray. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W.D. “Bam” Moore, her twin sister Devella Wray High and sister Shirley Wray Stokes, her brother Robert Wray and her grandson Bryan Moore.

Marcella was born and raised in Gaston, NC and graduated from Gaston High School.  She worked as a bookkeeper at Roanoke Builders Supply and helped Bam manage Moore’s Super Market in Gaston.  She was married to Bam for 57 years.

She is survived by her son, Todd, his wife Janet, and their sons, Kevin and Steven; her son Rich, his wife Janet, their son Collin; her step-daughter, Christine Brown, her husband Len, her sons, Kenny Goodfellow and Tim Goodfellow; her sister Peggy Massey, her husband Jimmy, their daughters, Chris, Karen and Michelle; her sister Debbie Edwards, her husband Bennie and their daughters Dana and Holly.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 20, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home Thursday, March 19, 2015 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

The family would like to thank Mrs. Moore’s caregivers and Community Home Health and Hospice whose love and care allowed Mrs. Moore to stay at her home in her final days.

Mrs. Margaret Woodard Edwards age 84, of Margarettsville, NC passed away March 15, 2015.

Mrs. Edwards was born March 15, 1931 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Raymond Woodard and Carrie Revelle Woodard.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond E. Edwards, two sisters, Estelle W. Daughtry and Mary W. Edwards and two brother, Roy Woodard and Lewis Woodard.  She was a member of Sharon Methodist Church.

 She is survived by her daughter, Cathy E. Corey and her husband Karl of Margarettsville, NC and her son Michael Edwards and his wife Regina of Jacksonville, NC.  Her brother, Calvin Woodard of Margarettsville, NC. Her sister, Sarah W. Plank of Florida.  Two granddaughters, Ana and Maria Edwards.

 Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

 The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 PM until service time.

Edith Faye Hall, age 62 formerly of Seaboard, NC passed away March 18, 2015.

Edith Faye was born February 14, 1953 in Halifax County ,North Carolina, the daughter of the late George Perry Hall Sr. and Marion Worsham Hall.

She was a longtime resident of Seaboard where she attended school and was a member of Seaboard Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sister, Gail Hall Bass and her husband Gary of Leland, NC, her brother, George Perry Hall Jr. and his wife Karen of Shelby. Also several nieces and nephews.

 Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Jim Cox and Rev. Richard Gaskins officiating.  Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Hollie Johnson Wells age 38, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Hollie was born September 3, 1976.  

She graduated from Campbell College with a degree in Pharmaceutical Science. She worked for Sandoz in Wilson, NC and worked at Halifax Community College as a Continuing Education Instructor.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Wells. Her children, Fenton and Mikaylie Wells.  Her parents Woodie and Sandra Johnson. Her brother Chris Johnson. Her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Regina Price and Forrest Price. Her grandmothers, Dorothy Felton Lovegrove, Katherine Price and Lillian Pearson. Her brother-in-law, Jeffrey Wells and his wife Blair and her sister-in-laws, Kendall Wier and her husband Justin and Julia Lanier.  A very special niece, Lauren Kate Johnson and nieces and nephews, Kylie, Camren and Jesse Wells and Emma and Ella Lanier. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Galatia Baptist Church with Rev. David Foster officiating.  Burial will follow at Milwaukee Cemetery in Milwaukee.

Carmen Rose Davis age 59, of Conway, NC passed away Monday, March 23, 2015 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Rose was born November 27, 1955 in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Willie Vaughan and Cora Lawrence Vaughan.

Survivors include her husband Kenneth Davis.  Her children, Jody Lynn Davis and Melanie Ann Davis Burke and her husband Jerry.  Her grandchild, Zoe Burke.  Her brothers and sisters, Monty Brickhouse and his wife Patricia, Glenn Brickhouse, Allen Brickhouse, Bill Vaughan and his wife Betsy, Sue Cofield and her husband Kirwan and Jean Martin.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson with Harold L. Massey officiating. 

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Junie Maddrey Massey Barnes age 85, of Pleasant Hill, NC passed away Friday, March 27, 2015.

Mrs. Barnes was born January 10, 1930, the daughter of the late

Rufus Maddrey and Lizzie Pearl Futrell Maddrey.  She was also predeceased by her first husband, James R. Massey Sr., her daughter, Cathy Massey and her second husband Lester Barnes, her brothers and sisters, Huel Maddrey, Lloyd Maddrey, Pearl Gilliam, Calvin Maddrey and Lawrence Maddrey.   She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a member of the church choir. 

She is survived by her children, James R. Massey Jr. and his wife Janet, Debby M. Babb and her husband Conrad and Wayne M. Massey.

Her grandchildren, Heather Rose and her husband Edwin, Kim Babb, Jennifer Williams and husband David and Julie Muskalla and husband Nick.

Her great grandchildren, Chelsea and Cole Rose, Drew, Emily and Sarah Williams and Matthew Muskalla. Her two sisters, Dorcas Evelyn Bennett and Helen M. Harris.  Also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 30, 3015 at 3:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.  

Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home on Monday beginning at 2:00 PM prior to the services.

 Ellen Elizabeth Lawrence Mizell age 97 passed away on April 3, 2015 at Signature Health Care Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Ellen was born December 30, 1917 in Bertie County North Carolina the daughter of the late Richard Lawrence and Sally Ann Cowen Lawrence.

She was also preceded in death by her husband James Starkey Mizell and a brother Joe Henry Lawrence and her grandson Gerald Wayne Spruill. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother as well as a great great grandmother.

Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters; Cardelia Seuis and husband George of Roanoke Rapids, Ann Spruill of Como, NC and Mary Moore and her husband Marion of Roanoke Rapids; Her son James F. Mizell and his wife Lois of Roanoke Rapids; Her brother Robert T. Lawrence of Windsor, NC; Her 9 grandchildren James Spruill, Angie Spence, Marion Moore, Jr., Christy Plyer, John Moore, Danny Seuis, Amy James, Mandy Bailey and Penney Brooks; Her nine great grandchildren and her four great great grandchildren.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held Monday, April 6, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM service time.

Charles Cornelius "CC" Howell

Charles Cornelius

Mr. Charles Cornelius Howell (C.C.), age 79, of Seaboard, NC passed away at his home on April 4, 2015.

C.C. was born September 7, 1935 in Seaboard, NC, the son of the late Howard and Alma Matthews Howell. He was also predeceased by his older brother, Howard Randolph Howell.

C.C. was the former owner of Howell Equipment Company for many years

For twenty five years he was Human Relations Consultant for N.C.

State. He was directly responsible for thirty four counties and was trained to cover the entire state in times of crisis.

C.C. was a lifelong member of Seaboard Baptist Church where he served as Trustee, Deacon, Chairman of the Deacon Board, Deacon Emeritus and Sunday School Superintendent. He was active in the Brotherhood of the Church, serving as president for several years. He was Region 1 Coordinator for Baptist Men. He was in charge of monthly community work for many years. He also went on five mission trips.

     C.C. was a charter member of the Northampton County Chamber of Commerce, serving as president and on the Board of Directors.  He was a charter member of the Northampton Economic Development Commission.

He wrote, by hand, numerous letters to businesses and groups encouraging them to consider Seaboard as a desirable place to expand their business. He had a passion for seeing Northampton County grow. He was instrumental in getting Union Camp, Seaboard Garment Company, and Coghill Peanut Company to locate in Seaboard.

He was a member of Seaboard Lions Club and the Northampton County Forestry Club.  He was actively involved with Roanoke Rapids Chapter of Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship where he held several offices including President.

 C.C. is survived by his wife of 53 ½ years, Carol Winston Howell of the home, two daughters, Catherine Lyons MacAllister (Mark) of Pittsboro, NC and Elizabeth Winston Parrish (Phillip) of Wendell, NC, two grandchildren, Manon and Cade MacAllister of Pittsboro, NC and two step-grandchildren, Matthew and Elizabeth Parrish of Clayton, NC.

 Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Seaboard Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Gaskins and Rev. Steve Trussell officiating. Burial will follow at Seaboard Cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the services at Seaboard Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

Lillie Mae Price Turner was called home to be with the Lord on April 12, 2015.

Mrs. Turner was born September 28, 1930 in Northampton County, North Carolina the daughter of the late William Henry Price and Josie Birdsong Price. She was also preceded in death by her husband Jasper Turner, and her four children Marvin Glenn Turner, Jimmy Earl Turner, Brenda Jean Turner Leggett and Jasper Turner, Jr.

She loved the Lord and was a life long member of Community Baptist Church in Gaston, NC.

Lillie Mae really loved animals especially cats. She was a very hard working farmers wife and loved her family more than words.

Lillie Mae was a very special person who has left behind a great Turner Family legacy. Lillie was also an avid North Carolina Tar Heels fan.

Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters Linda Turner Acree of Gaston, NC, Vickie Mae Turner and fiancé Mike Allen of Gaston, NC and Cindy Turner McCorkle and her husband Mack of Cary, NC; Her son Michael Wayne Turner and wife Wendy Edwards Turner of Gaston, NC; Her ten grandchildren Brandon Wright and wife Kelly, Kristy Wright, Paul Acree, Tracy Allen and husband Shane, Greg Acree, Glenda Turner Peterson and husband James, Stacy McCloud, Mack McCorkle, Heather Bailey and husband Brandon, Christopher Scott Ferrell and fiancé Ashley Brooks, ten great grandchildren and her special friend Viola Dunlow.

Rev. Lonnie R. Armstrong

Rev. Lonnie R. Armstrong age 88, of Pendleton, NC passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Rev. Armstrong was born May 13, 1926 in Nash County, NC the son of the late Joshua Lawrence Armstrong and Eula Mae Shearin Armstrong.  

He was also preceded in death by his wife Jean H. Armstrong, his son Dan Armstrong, a brother, Leon Armstrong and two sisters, Margaret Louise Edwards and Ruby Davis.

Rev. Armstrong served in country in the US Army during World War II and at the time of discharge had the rank of Staff Sergeant. He graduated from Southeastern Seminary.

He was ordained October 1968 and Licensed in February 1968. He served a two church field in Castalia, NC. In 1974 he began to serve as pastor of Galatia Baptist Church for the next twelve and one half years.  He went on to serve as Director of Missions for the West Chowan Baptist Associations.

He is survived by his daughter Marty A. Woodard and her husband Dennis of Severn, NC, his daughter-in-law Lita S. Armstrong of Spring Hope, NC, four grandchildren, Callie and Jeanann Woodard, Molly A. Jones and Fred Simmons. Also one brother, Willie Armstrong of Rocky Mount, NC.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Galatia Baptist Church with Rev. David Foster, Rev. James Hester and Rev. Mark Corbett officiating. Burial will follow at Severn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday, April 17, 2015 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

Flowers are welcomed, however memorial contributions may be made to Galatia Baptist Church or Chowan College.

Harry Vernon Williams age 73 of Jackson, NC passed away on May 6, 2015 at his home.

Harry was born May 10, 1941 in Pink Hill North Carolina the son of the late Harry E. Williams and Lula Elisabeth Deaver Williams.

Clyde Lee Futrelle, age 85, passed away on May 10, 2015 at Rich Square Health Care Center.

Clyde was born January 8, 1930 in Northampton County North Carolina, the son of the late William Jordan Futrelle and Bettie Sue Joyner Futrelle.

Clyde worked many years in sheet finishing with Champion Paper Company and International Paper.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years Nettie Ruth Futrelle of Milwaukee, NC; His children Terry Futrelle (Mary Lynn) of Como, NC, Betty F. Jones (Danny Bowman) of Milwaukee, NC and Jill F. Owens (Robert) of Como, NC; His sister Margaret Johnson of Pinetops, NC and his four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service to celebrate the life of Clyde Futrelle will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Bethany United Methodist Church in Milwaukee, NC with Rev. Dr. Suzanne Cobb and Rev. David Ross officiating. Burial will follow in Milwaukee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Milwaukee Cemetery Fund.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC Tuesday, May 12, 2015 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Michael Joseph Luisi, age 88 passed away May 15, 2015 at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital in Chapel Hill North Carolina.

Michael was born February 15, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Esther and Anthony Luisi.

He was also preceded in death by his wife Gilda Thresa Luisi.

Michael served in the United States Navy and found his call in life as a butcher.

He loved the outdoors, boating and just being on the water from Long Island, New York to Lake Gaston North Carolina.

Everyone said Michael just had that special talent of being a great meat cutter for many years.

Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters; Lorraine Luisi of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Donna Held and her husband Bernard of Littleton, NC, Lake Gaston. He also leaves behind a very special friend Rose Reid of Roanoke Rapids, NC and many other loving family members and friends.

A funeral mass to celebrate the life of Michael Luisi will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. John Catholic Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Father Pius Wekesa officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
